What's White, Black, and Brown All Over?

I couldn't use the title "Rain, Rain, Go Away" because I used that one last time.

According to the weather sites in October we have had 3.59 inches of rain so far in October (maybe we'll get more tomorrow). Saturday alone we got .22 inches of rain. Those that worked on the addition on Saturday soaked up most of that. Although we did note that the shingles we were able to get down were working right on the spot. After a couple of hours of that we decided we would do some "drier" work, so we switched to putting in windows and wrapping the walls with Tyvek.

So what is white, black and brown all over? Our roof, of course. First OSB,

then tar paper,

then our shingles.

Today the sun is shining and there is a small crew continuing to work on the roof. We'd love to have you come join us, we usually work rain or shine!

Rain, Rain, Go Away

Last week I commented about the snow, this week it was rain!

But, despite the rain we were able to make forward progress. We placed the rafters over the utility room, finished sheeting the roof, finished most of the soffits, framed out the entrance gable, braced the rafters, finished sheeting the walls and tied into the existing Sunday School roof.

These are all things that needed to be done before we can roof, and with the wet OSB we couldn't start putting ice guard and tar paper down. We are hoping to do that this Friday and Saturday. Should I say, weather permitting this time.

Setting Rafters in the Snow

We said we wanted to have the Sunday School addition closed in before it snowed, not while it snowed.

Last week we were fighting off rain via some black plastic, a huge "sandbag" down by the lower door, and a shopvac. But then it turned cold on us. Friday morning we had a boom truck scheduled so we had to go ahead despite 30-35 degree temperatures and some snow in the air.

Despite the bad weather we made good progress in setting the trusses.

I think it really starts to give our addition some dimension. You can start to see the finished look with the entrance, and rooflines.

Soon we will have it under a roof!

Things Are Looking Good All Around

What an amazing weekend! Our Sunday School addition has taken some shape!

This may be one of those times where pictures speak much louder than words.

I will just say this, we have walls to almost all of our rooms and with some work Tuesday we should be ready to set trusses on Friday. We have them arriving at 8:00, along with a boom truck.

Also, generosity breeds generosity. Trent Grice saw the work being done on the Sunday School addition, and found out that it was all donated labor. He decided that he would donate new landscaping for the front of church...and does it look good!

Things are really shaping up around here!

Oh, Happy Day

Through some very dedicated volunteers, who have put in some very impressive hours already on the Sunday School addition, we have gotten to where we are today. Even some late nights under the lights.

By Friday morning our plumbing was done and inspected. Now we had a lot of work to get ready for pouring the concrete floor first thing Saturday morning but had all day Friday to do it. We had to level out the sand, compact the sand, water the sand, put down plastic, put down reinforcing wire, set level stakes, and mark the floor level around the preimeter of the rooms.

People kept on arriving throughout the morning and the work seemed to accelerate. By noon we had to decide if we would pour concrete the next morning or not. The weather did not look good. It went from 50% chance of rain up to 60%, then 70%, and finally at noon it was at 80%. That was not good news for pouring concrete.

With some encouraging volunteers we finally made the decision that we would pour the floor at 4 o'clock on Friday. Within an hour and a half we poured 21 yards of concrete!

Through the evening and into the night we did the final finishing, with very little rain. After the final touch we covered it with plastic and let the rain come, which it did come Saturday morning.

That now opens the way for us to start working with wood! We know that many are more comfortable and skilled with wood than concrete so now is your chance. We are planning on building the walls this Friday and Saturday. So come on out and join us as we see this really take shape this next weekend!
